Naples and its waters: a 2700 year long history

The exhibition itinerary:

The authors and participating institutions

The history of "Parthenŏpe", as the city was defined at its origins, assuming later the name of Neapolis and finally Naples, throughout its thousand-year history, has always had the need, since its dawn, to obtain drinking water, necessary for its existence.

The first Greek settlers were able to settle on Neapolitan soil by exploiting the natural sources that flowed there locally, on the slopes of Mount Echia and in other places near the coast close to the promontory itself.

With the foundation of the new city, or Neapolis, the needs increased exponentially, and since then the fate of the city and its province has remained closely linked to the passage of three aqueducts, which starting from the 4th century BC had their function of supplying drinking water to homes and production activities.

Feeling the urgent need to deepen the knowledge of the history of their city, a group of students, all attending the fourth E class of the “Francesco Sbordone” classical and scientific high School in Naples, in the 2022/23 school year, decided to carry out in-depth historical research in in this sense, trying to identify and locate the ancient routes of the Neapolitan aqueducts in the above mentioned territory.

The need for knowledge and the desire to disseminate the narrative of a people arose among the authors thanks to the skills accumulated through participation in the Olympics and Acropolis of Positive Knowledge and by taking advantage of the principles conveyed by them, such as:

- "developing the ability to act as responsible citizens and to participate fully and consciously in the civic, cultural and social life of the community";

-“promoting the cult of historical memory for a more careful reflection on contemporaneity, the refinement of critical thinking free from prejudice”;

-"contributing to a research community, an evolving cultural heritage community".

The Positive Knowledge Olympics is a project that aims to promote training links among autonomous, academic, university and cultural educational institutions, centers and museum centres.

The Positive Knowledge Olympics arise from the synergy between prof. Laura Colantonio, and prof. Raffaele Iovine, respectively the first principal of the “Francesco Sbordone” high school, and the second, president of the Pietrasanta cultural center, a Third Sector Institution in Naples, and which sees the “Francesco Sbordone” Classical and Scientific High School as its leader educational institution.
